Trivia

  • Officer Will Simpson is based on the comics character Nuke. Nuke’s given name is Frank Simpson. In the comics, the character was a participant in the Weapon Plus supersoldier program that also had ties to the origins of Captain America, Wolverine, and Deadpool, among many others. He was fitted with cybernetics that granted him superstrength and speed. The character’s origins have been heavily updated for the show.
  • Jessica tells Luke her powers were due to an accident. In the Alias comics that form the basis for the series, Jessica and her family were on a road trip when their car got into an accident with a truck carrying radioactive material. The crash killed her parents and brother, and Jessica spent months in a coma before waking and then discovering her new abilities.
  • Luke tells Jessica his unbreakable skin was part of an experiment. In the comics, Carl Lucas was an imprisoned criminal who volunteered for an experimental cell regeneration program that was also based on the research for the Weapon Plus supersoldier program. An accident caused by one of the prison guards who hated Lucas altered the experiment and gave him unbreakable steel-like skin ans superstrength. With his new abilities, he escaped prison, went back to New York, took on the alias Luke Cage, and began to hire out his services as hero.
  • Luke mentions the “big, green dude and his crew,” an obvious reference to the Hulk and the Avengers.

Quotes

Jessica: “I’ve never done it with someone else who has, y’know…”
Luke: (beat) “…gifts?”
Jessica: “Yes, well, you are very gifted.”

* * *

Luke: “Were you born this way?”
Jessica: “Nope. Accident. You?”
Luke: “Experiment. Does anyone else know about your…abilities?”
Jessica: “A couple. I’m not hiding, but I’m not advertising.”
Luke: “People find out they either come at you with a noose or with their hands out. I got no use for either.”
Jessica: “So, what, you just don’t use it?”
Luke: “I protect myself and what’s mine. That’s it. Being a hero just puts a target on your back.”
Jessica: “Yeah, been there, done that.”
Luke: “The hero gig?”
Jessica: “I gave it a shot once.”
Luke: “Tell me there was a costume and you still got it.”
